Montgomery County Maryland approves bag tax
The Montgomery County Council in Maryland voted 8-1 on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 to approve a 5 cent tax for each plastic or paper bag issued at retail check-outs in Montgomery County, MD.
Montgomery County stores will begin charging customers a 5 cent charge to sue plastic or paper shopping bags beginning in January 2012.
Montgomery County will be the first Maryland jurisdiction with such a tax in place. Officials reported they will spend most of the money raised by the tax to buy reusable bags for anyone who wants them and will create an educational campaign for residents.
