2017 List of the Most Charitable and Least Charitable States
How does your state rank?
A recent report by personal-finance website WalletHub identified Utah as the most charitable state in the US. Utah ranked first for highest volunteer rate, highest percentage of donated income and highest percentage of population who donate time. The criteria considered “volunteering and service” and “charitable giving." They also looked at community-service requirements for high school graduation and public charities.
The next best charitable states were #2 Maryland, #3 Minnesota and #4 Wyoming among the top charitable states. Illinois was the top state for percentage of the population who donate money. West Virginia was No. 1 for the percentage of population collecting and distributing food.
Hawaii received the lowest overall ranking, also coming in last for percentage of people collecting and distributing food.
The website used data from a variety of groups, including the U.S. Census Bureau, US Department of Housing and Urban Development, Internal Revenue Service, Feeding America and Gallup.
